Custom made area rugs ... how to care for them ?

Custom made area rugs could be one of the most valuable pieces of furniture, and proper care is essential to keep them looking great, especially if they are oriental rugs. Here are a few tips ...

Moths and dampness can harm your area rug

Moths eat pile and the knots on the back of a rug, and can damage your rug. Moths are attracted to areas that are relatively undisturbed, and you can avoid moths just be cleaning your rug regularly.

Dampness can cause the threads to rot over a period of time, and dampness should be avoided. Rugs should not be stored in humid, poorly ventilated and damp rooms as this can damage them. Stored rugs should be inspected periodically and dampness should be removed.

Mechanical wear and tear

Mechanical wear and tear should be dealt with quickly if further damage is to be avoided. Parts of area rugs that get damaged can be repaired, though some repairs may be expensive.

Avoid sun damage

Direct sunlight can damage some oriental rugs, and you might want to use heavy curtains or window shades to reduce the exposure to sunlight.

Hanging rugs on the wall

While hanging rugs on the wall, you might want to make sure whether the threads can withstand the strain.

Padding for your rug

A good padding can greatly reduce the wear and tear of your rug and extend its life. Wear is highest at areas with high traffic, and using a good padding would be a good idea to reduce mechanical wear at such areas.
