Stone and tiles - the difference
Tiles are made from slabs of clay and go through a firing process. Tiles are of two types - glazed and unglazed.
Properties of marble, granite and other stone floors
Marble floors - One of the most beautiful of stones, marble reflects fine taste and exudes elegance. Marble is also relatively more porous than granite and some marble floors can be easily stained by several liquids. Polished marble is also very slippery when wet.
Granite floors - Available in a very wide array of shades. Granite floors are beautiful when properly installed and cared for. Granite is extremely stain resistant.
Professional installers recommend neutral pH breathable sealers for both marble and granite.
Other stones used commonly for flooring are slate, limestone and travertine.
Flooring tiles should have a stain-proof, non-skid surface. Some stones are very slippery when wet. The slipperiness of a stone is what determines its suitability for use as a flooring material.
